Alan Henry: Round pegs, round holes.

Alan Henry: Round pegs, round holes.

Friday, 2nd March 2007

Raikkonen was a raw talent when he first arrived at McLaren in 2002, like a wayward labrador which hadn't been tamed or trained.

Despite the brave talk from both sides, it now seems clear that Kimi signed for Ferrari before the end of 2005 so, to all intents and purposes, they were wasting each others' time throughout 2006. Similarly, Montoya had an explicably frustrating season-and-a-half with McLaren, leaving in tatters the team's somewhat pompous claim that they manage drivers better than just about anybody else in the pit-lane.

This is demonstrably not the case, but that shouldn't be seen as any reason why Fernando Alonso and Hamilton will not thrive in the McMerc environment. Life is all about timing and, although Raikkonen, JPM and McLaren pushed all each others' wrong buttons, Alonso and Hamilton look like round pegs in round holes. Unusual in F1 perhaps, but none the less true for all that.
