Alan Henry: Time for Jenson to speak up?

Monday, 23rd April 2007

If Lewis Hamilton was driving the current Honda, he would almost certainly be mired in the midfield, gaining only passing mentions from the frenzied media pack.

Of course, Senna was a multiple grand prix winner and that hard fact certainly strengthened his negotiating position. As we know, Button's CV contains just a single race win and a handful of near misses, a sad fact which serves to distort his status within the F1 community. Seven years ago his early F1 races were being accompanied by the sense of fevered expectancy which currently surrounds young Lewis Hamilton's early achievements. But a driver is nothing without a halfway decent car and, if Hamilton was driving the current Honda, he would almost certainly be mired in the midfield, gaining only passing mentions from the frenzied media pack.

What more is there to be said about Hamilton, so obviously a superstar in the making? He is clearly the kid who has it all and he'll win a grand prix very much sooner than later. But how he comes to terms with setbacks and career misfortune will represent an even more telling index of his capability. In my view, he'll do just fine.
