Polesitter KIMI RAIKKONEN/
McLaren led from flag to flag Sunday to win the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, and it wasn't much of a contest.
It was his second pole of the season and his first win this year - third of his
F1 career.
Local favourite, FERNANDO ALONSO/
Renault was unable to make it four Grand’s Prix victories in a row. He started third and finished runner-up, and said: "This is the same feeling as winning."
Alonso extended his points lead, as did Renault in the Constructor's Championship. He's five for five in podium finishes so far this season. Alonso's second place finish was enough to satisfy his loyal fans which helped to sell out the race. Reportedly, the Sunday crowd was 115,900, bringing the weekend total to 301,900, which included 25,000 on Thursday just to walk around.
JARNO TRULLI/
Toyota, who was fastest in Saturday qualifying, finished third, followed by team-mate, RALF SCHUMACHER, who started third. Trulli had a bit of a flameout leaving the pits after his first stop, but it blew out.
GIANCARLO FISICHELLA/Renault was fifth finisher and fastest with a lap of 1m 15.641s on his last lap. He suffered a blistering rear tyre, and then had an unexplained downforce problem, forcing a nose change.
MARK WEBBER/
Williams finished seventh after starting second.
JUAN PABLO MONTOYA/McLaren was the last of the points’ getters, after starting seventh. JPM survived a horrendous crash during Saturday qualifying. Sunday, he had refuelling problems, causing an extra pit stop, and then he spun and continued during the race. He finished one lap down.
All the points’ getters were running Michelin tyres.
The top
Bridgestone finisher was RUBENS BARRICHELLO/
Ferrari, who finished ninth, one lap down. His team-mate, MICHAEL SCHUMACHER/Ferrari had another character-building weekend, starting eighth and retiring after suffering from two left flat tyres. The tyre manufacturer has launched an investigation and said that Fisichella's Michelin tyre problems could have had the same cause. Fisichella blistered a rear tyre early on.
