JENSON BUTTON/BAR has the pole for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal with a time of 1m 15.217s. It was his second
F1 pole position, and his first this year.
He said "I was a little bit surprised to be that quick, actually. This is a huge boost for the team. We've had a few tough months and they've worked exceptionally hard and it's great to give them something back."
Beside Button on the front row is a newly revitalized MICHAEL SCHUMACHER/
Ferrari. Points' leader, FERNANDO ALONSO and his
Renault team-mate, GIANCARLO FISICHELLA, start third and fourth, respectively. JUAN PABLO MONTOYA/
McLaren will start fifth.
JPM's team-mate, KIMI RAIKKONEN, starts seventh, behind Button's BAR team-mate, TAKUMA SATO. Raikkonen was fastest in the Saturday morning Practice session. The BAR boys missed two races because of technical infractions and neither has earned a point this season.
JACQUES VILLENEUVE/Sauber will start eighth on the circuit named for his father, GILLES VILLENEUVE. As the drivers qualified in the finishing order from the last race, Villeneuve ran before many of the front runners and briefly was on pole. The partisan Canadian crowd gave him a standing ovation. He still is a home town favourite.
Toyota drivers JARNO TRULLI and RALF SCHUMACHER rounded out the top ten.
RUBENS BARRICHELLO/Ferrari will start last because of gearbox problems on his warm up lap for qualifying. He went to the garage, smoking, without recording a timed lap.
Cars running Michelin tyres dominated the qualifying session on the 2.709-mile/4.361 km road/street course. With the sole exception of
Michael Schumacher, 13 of the top 14 cars were on Michelins.
