Press Snoop: Race of attrition.

Monday, 3rd April 2006

FERNANDO ALONSO won the 2006 F1 Foster's Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne, taking his tenth career victory, on Sunday, making it three out of three for the Renault team, and leading the drivers' standings with 28 points.

Later, Montoya would hit the same kerb but save it - only to have the ride deactivate his default system which shut off his engine, ending his day.

Alonso made a killer pass on polesitter BUTTON on lap four after the first restart. Button ran well for the rest of the race and was going to finish in the points... until he flamed out 20 metres short of the chequered flag while running fifth, and was classified as finishing tenth, one lap down.

Local hero MARK WEBBER was doing well, running fourth and fifth, before moving up to take the lead during pit-stops. However, that old reliability bug bit Williams again, and he pulled over and stopped at turn 13 with gearbox failure on lap 24. Alonso regained the lead.

The safety car led 13 laps during the four occasions it was utilised to clean up carnage.

All cars passed Tech.

The next race is three weeks away, in Imola.
