Alan Henry: Boosting Button.

Thursday, 6th April 2006

Does anybody out there remember Chris Amon? If you're under 30, probably not. Chris drove his last grand prix in 1976 and, to turn things around slightly, could be described as the Jenson Button of his day.

"People say that his first grand prix win looks further away than ever, but I don't think that's the case at all," said Stewart, "I think it is closer than ever because, although Jenson had that run of ten podium finishes in 2004, I think the team is now more mature and better supplied than it has ever been. All the ingredients are there and I think that Honda is ready to win a race.

"That said, you do need a little bit of luck. I don't believe in bad luck; that's usually human error or bad preparation. But I keep reminding everyone that I went to the 1969 Spanish GP and I won the race. I came from sixth place to win without ever passing a car because they all dropped out. That was good luck. But, if there's consistent bad luck, it can be used as a crutch."

Stewart, of course, was a contemporary of Amon whom he described as 'one of the finest drivers with the most perfect skills' that he ever raced against. Sounds worryingly like Jenson, too. But I'll side with Sir Jackie on this. Button will win races. But a championship? Hmm. That's another story altogether.
