Hamilton won Saturday's Nurburgring GP2 feature race despite having to take a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit-lane. Under the two-race format, the first eight finishers in the first race line up in reverse order for Sunday's second event, but that in no way inhibited the 21-year old's performance, as he sliced confidently through the pack to win again. He ended the weekend the weekend just a single point off series leader Nelson Piquet Jr.
It is early days yet but, if Hamilton continues in this vein for the remainder of the year, he must be favourite to succeed his one-time karting team-mate
Nico Rosberg as this year's GP2 champion and definitely become the first black driver to compete in the world championship.
For a team which projects such a high technology, cutting edge image,
McLaren has a reputation for not taking undue risks when it comes to their driver selection process. They and their sponsors expect them to be potential race and championship winners, and they historically prefer highly experienced drivers in their cars.
McLaren have admitted it is possible that they would consider sub-contracting Hamilton out to another
Formula One team in order for him to gain racing experience. But Whitmarsh makes no secret of the fact that this British driver's long-term future rests with McLaren and such a contract 'would be on the end of a very strong piece of elastic'.
