Not making the second cut were JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, MARK WEBBER, the only American, rookie SCOTT SPEED; CHRISTIJAN ALBERS; TIAGO MONTEIRO and CHRISTIAN KLIEN.
Not making the first cut were DAVID COULTHARD, TAKUMA SATO, NICO ROSBERG, JARNO TRULLI, VITANTONIO LIUZZI and FRANCK MONTAGNY.
NICO ROSBERG changed his engine before the weekend began, so he doesn't suffer a ten-position drop in qualifying order. He will start 19th. JARNO TRULLI pitted during the first session dragging something, which he later identified as a suspension part. He will start 20th.
Ferrari dominated the Saturday morning practice, with Schumacher's and Massa running in that order.
Only one tyre manufacturer will be authorised by
FIA for Formula One next year, and Michelin made it known early on that this was not acceptable in the spirit of competition and it will not bid to be that manufacturer.
"Formula One should be an arena where the most advanced technologies can do battle in the interest of motoring," the company said, "In this respect, the changes in the Formula One rules to bring in a single-tyre supplier go completely against these principles. It is one more step towards standardising a sport which should be practised at the highest level of competition.
"As a result, Michelin will not reply to the FIA tender for tyre supply in
Formula One. It does not wish to be seen to support the spirit of this tender at a time when the quality of its tyres has been amply demonstrated and appreciated by its partners."
Last weekend in Canada, Michelin won its one-hundredth Formula One race.
Williams reliability isn't the best this season. MARK WEBBER has completed the fewest laps of any
F1 racer - 340. His team-mate, NICO ROSBERG, has the third worst record. Webber will start twelfth.
