Alan Henry: Hooking the US.

Thursday, 6th July 2006

Writing this on 4 July is very appropriate because, when it comes to Formula One matters, the USA really is extremely independent-minded - almost semi-detached - from the mainstream flow of the sport.

Having witnessed another disappointingly processional Ferrari demonstration run in this year's US GP, it struck me that we need to stop putting the cart before the horse as we attempt to inspire American fans to take an interest in F1. Don't get me wrong here, we definitely need a US round of the World Championship - Bernie's joshing aside - but, to really catch the attention of the public, it's even more crucial that we have more home-grown drivers to help Scott Speed share the load.

That means the priority is to nurture the careers of 17-year old Graham Rahal and 18-year old Marco Andretti, both members of famous Indy 500 winning families. Graham is already committed to a road racing future, so all we've got to do now is persuade Marco to follow suit, even though it's tempting for him to stay in the IRL after almost winning this year's 500 on his debut outing in America's classic race. Marco, listen to your grandfather Mario and come on over!

As soon as possible, please.
