ROBERT KUBICA/BMW-Sauber was the fastest
Formula One driver Friday at Magny Cours for the first day of
F1 French Grand Prix practice. His fastest time was posted in the morning ? 1m 16.794s.
In the morning Kubica was followed by ANTHONY DAVIDSON/
Honda, who was fastest on Friday at the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Third through fifth in the morning were JENSON BUTTON/Honda; RALF SCHUMACHER/Toyota; and ADRIAN SUTIL for Midland. Sutil, from Germany, is in his first year as a test driver for MF1-
Toyota, and has raced in the A1GP series. Sutil is replacing GIORGIO MONDINI this weekend.
In the afternoon, Kubica edged FERNANDO ALONSO/Renault, 1m 16.902s to 1m 17.498s. Third through fifth were Davidson; ALEXANDER WURZ/Williams-Cosworth; and GIANCARLO FISICHELLA/
Renault.
PEDRO de la ROSA replaced JUAN PABLO MONTOYA in the
McLaren F1 seat. He didn't go out in the morning practice, and he was twenty-second in the afternoon. McLaren is one of the four teams which don't have Friday Test Drivers.
Only 15 drivers were on course in the morning, including six F1 regulars; but all 28 drivers were on course for the afternoon session.
KIMI RAIKKONEN/McLaren ended his second session by pulling off with mechanical problems.
Both RUBENS BARRICHELLO/Honda and American SCOTT SPEED/Toro Rosso spun and hit the wall, but they are both all right.
FRANCK MONTAGNY of France obviously felt pleased that
Super Aguri kept him on for one more race with the team so he could race in front of his home crowd. He acknowledged that this could be his last race with the team. Montagny has been replacing YUJI IDE of Japan. The Japanese team is interesting in having a Japanese driver.
