Indeed, having slashed 14 points from Alonso's lead in three races, Schumacher looks all set to chip away at that 11 point lead further in Hungary, particularly as he currently owns six of their winners' trophies in 14 attempts.
However, while the momentum is clearly with the German, Schumacher is remaining cautious about his chances in Hungary, stating his aim first and foremost is to continue taking points off his arch-rival before he starts thinking about his title chances.
“It is onto the next stage in Budapest and, obviously, I hope for a result like last week's at Hockenheim. Many think that we should do well but, as you know, I prefer not to get carried away too easily and make any rash predictions. In this case it is not even necessary as the important thing is be stay focused on our objectives.
“This is our main aim - to keep our feet on the ground and keep fighting. We will take a step at a time. Employing this approach is the only way that Hungary can be another positive round for us. Our objective has to be a clear one: to take as many points as possible and reduce the gap to
Renault and Alonso.
“Budapest will be tough from a technical point of view but, in my opinion, more enjoyable to race than in the past. Even overtaking should be easier this year. I think that we can expect an exciting race before the summer break.”
Having played the perfect team role yet again in Germany,
Felipe Massa goes to Hungary with the honour of now being classified as the third ranked driver in this year's standings.
Although his chances of a first win in Hungary very much depend on whether Schumacher is ahead or directly behind him, the Brazilian is beginning to show that he has front running pace and when he does get the chance to show it, that maiden victory cannot be too far away…
Toyota – Ralf Schumacher (#7), Jarno Trulli (#8):
The German Grand Prix was one of missed opportunities for
Toyota, because while they claimed another two points to add to their steadily rising points tally, seventh place was staunch reward for their ultimate pace.
