Heikki Kovalainen has been officially confirmed as a McLaren-Mercedes driver for 2008, stepping into Fernando Alonso's seat for the second year in succession.
There is no way mclaren will let Heikki actually compete with Hamilton. I really hope Heikki will be as fiesty as Alonso and demand an equal treatment at mclaren.

hmmm doesnt take long around here for some toss pot to ruin the comments section does it
Shame McLaren hasn't given Pedro an opportunity, he'd be the perfect partner for Hamilton, can't see Heikki that will be prepared to roll over and let Hamilton rule the roost there though.
He's been improving with each event this year so I would suspect some fireworks at some stage next year within the Woking team!

this now makes it 7 drivers with a shot at the title next year. both ferraris, bmws, mclarens are a given but i can see alonso outperforming the renault to have a chance but not much of one. finland must be jumping for joy. there is one finn in the top two teams. i can also see a finland one-two in the upcoming championship

Don't know whether they've made a sensible decision or not, it's an obvious decision and probably a cheap alternative to an accomplished driver.
I would have thought that any number would have been worthy of an opportunity, Sutil, De La Rosa, Paffet, Rosberg, Alonso (Ha Ha!) Schumacher (Michael, now that would be a coup!) and of course Klien, Liuzzi or Button.
I'm sure that Kovalainen will end up doing a sterling job supporting the spoilt brat that is Lewis Hamilton, just hope we end up with a clean and competetive championship without all the ugliness of 2007, this year has been ayear to forget!

It would be interesting to see how Kovalainen compares to Alonso next year since they have swapped places - possibly make Flavio realise what he has been missing. I for one will be supporting him next year - I don't think he got the credit he deserved this year! I agree with sokudo - 4 teams and 7 drivers potentially up for race wins in 2008, its going to be a great year!

Alonso demanded number 1 status! He's lucky he got equal treatment.
anyway, this is great news.

Great news and can't wait for March 2008 to come.
Let's put all the Alonso problems behind us now and get on with racing with 2 excellent drivers in the No. 1 team.

Poor Heikki. Definitely number 2 next year... He deserves better than that.

Great choice by Mclaren, it was obvious that HK was going to get the drive though - he said 2 weeks ago he had a very competitive offer for a drive in 2008.
I dont think LH will get equal treatment til Round 12, despite what people say and think, Ron isnt foolish and wouldnt put all his eggs in one basket.
ROLL ON 2008!!
