Lewis Hamilton may have made a startling impression on the Formula 1 paddock during his record-breaking maiden season in the top flight last year, but he will never get close to challenging the achievements of fellow record-breaker Michael Schumacher.
Only time will tell. Certainly Schummi was special, but there's no way of knowing at such an early stage in LH's career whether or not he'll be as good (or as bad) as schummi.

"Lewis has many prizes but no titles in F1, he had his chance last year when he was sitting in the best car, but still Ferrari won"- Wille Webber, MS' manager.
Some of us having been saying this all along, but the powers that be created such a huge hype about LH that left him no margin to manouver in. He either wins the title this year or his downfall will be greater than Humpty Dumpty's. Until then he is just a chauffer like the rest.
Michael was not just a good driver, he was the most technical driver F1 had seen for many years, he was fully committed and fully dedicated towards the sport and Ferrari, and on the race track he was a dominating power.
MS was not that special! MS was surely giving the number one status at Ferrari! RB was a fool to let that nonsense continue for ye**** We will never know what it would have been like if Ferrari would have put as much effort into a two car team and not always for MS. Formula one has lost its edge years ago when someone thought it was so great to have the engineers and the computers control everything. The driver just has to sit in it and steer, brake and give it some gas! At the same time they are making millions and complain like a hungry child! Sad!

RENO SP- Pretty much on the button (as was Webber), especially the second paragraph!
Where is the evidence that McLaren was the best car over the season? Weber is forgetting that the double world champion was racing in the same car as well. Why will Hamiltons downfall be worse than Humpty Dumpty if he doesn't win the WDC this season? Raikkonen was in McLaren for 5 years and didn't win the WDC. What if Ferrari is the better car-is that Hamiltons fault?.

What did Schumacher do in his 1st season??? I only remember him frying a clutch in a Jordan , Lewis has gone head to head with Alonso and matched him fair and square, he even took the fight to the superior Ferraris on certain circuits. In his 1st season he won 4 races and set 6 poles, that is astonishing for a rookie in any race series. Schumacher was good but he is nowhere near great. Irvine & Barrichello were'nt allowed to race him at Ferrari and when he did come up against people in equal or better cars he lost, Hakkinen twice, Hill & Villeneuve or he rammed them off the road (JV in Japan Hill in Adelaide). If you are looking for Great then look no further than Ayrton Senna RIP.
..I guess he (like others) had nothing worthwhile to say to the journalist... let's wait and see..anyway, such uncertainty make f1 exciting nowadays..)

LH certainly accomplish more than any rookie in F1 and that by itself is an astonishment. We cant compare a retired race driver with many chances to win those 7 titles to a rookie who is going into his second season fairly. LH is young, and promising. Only time will tell if LH is as great as MS, or better. Comparing the 2 are like apples to oranges right now.

Lewis need never win a championship to be a better driver than TGF. If lewis does not turn into other drivers and does not have to have his team mates trodden on and kept behind him Lewis will be head and shoulders above Schumacher.

@Jon You seem to forget that Senna's callousness pushed him over the fairness line too don't forget 1990. Speaking of Irvine; he (long after he left Ferrari) in couple of interviews mentioned that Schumi was the fastest F1 pilot he has ever seen bar none. As far as Barrichello he was simply not in the same class as many others.

Seven(7) WDCs, 91 race wins, countless records broken and bestowed awards, etc and Shumi's still nowhere great? But 4 race wins and 6 poles (and numerous consolation prizes) makes Loser Hamilchoker a god? Hhhmmm... some things i just won't understand but hey, it's your own twisted world.
You can quote all of LH's achievements until the cows come home but at the end of the day he still doesn't have a WDC and that makes him an ordinary Formula 1 race driver like Button or Fischella.
I agree with you on Senna though. He was definitely great!

Schumi is the past, forget about him.
F1 is a championship which has 3 young drivers, clearly set apart from the rest of the pack who could easily bring in a WDC given a good car. Schumi had no credable competition during his reign as king, I for one found that very boring. I think Alonso is a bit of a wacko, but I hope renault produce the goods so we can have another 3 way scrap for the title.
I'm sure the season will be great so stop this fanboyish bickering.

how anyone can say schumi was not that good i will never understand, yes his head went wayward a couple of times but haven't we all done similar at some point, schumi was not in the best car at the start and won 2 titles, switched to a poor ferrari, stuck with it through thick and thin with no slagging the team off,he could have had more titles,i like hamilton and think he is champion material, time will deffo tell....

I do not recall using the word great in my post when I referred to MS. But I gave him all due credit for his achievements which will not be equalled for many years to come.
Gardhead grouper don't you know the Humpty Dumpty rhyme? Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, All the King's horses and all the King's men, Could never put Humpty together again. That's why. He aimed too high, his ego has been inflated beyond his imagination, and as I said, if he fails this season he would become a has been worse than Button.
At the moment the only two world class drivers in F1 are FAx2 and KRx1. LH and all the others are just glorified chauffers.
Anyone who says Schuey was poor is clearly nuts. Fact is we'll never be able to compare drivers past and present, but anyone who wasn't impressed with Hamilton's debut season needs a reality check.

Hamilton is talented, with great reflexes and good car control, some of which is natural talent and some of which can be learned with practice. His biggest problem is making stupid decisions. If he is not a stupid man, he will learn and grow and may well go on to be an etraordinary racer. On the other hand, if he IS actually a stupid man, you will see a reckless and dangerous Hamilton on the grid this year. This will be a real "make or break" season for him I believe. If he does not panic and learns from his mistakes he will be someone to challenge the best. If his large ego takes over he will be here and gone before his head stops spinning.

hamilton is a very good driver with many talents that could make him a legend but it is so difficult to compare the debut seasons of him and schumi because it was so much harder to drive the car schumi drove than the one hamilton drove last season but schumi has many blemishes on his career. look at the times he cheated. 94- adelaide- intentionally took out hill and himself to win title by a point 97- jerez- tries to take out villeneuve but fails, and is disqualified from championship 06- monaco- intentionally blocks track to slow down alonso he has done this a lot more and dont forget his team mates were number 2's. irvine, barrichello, herbert, lehto/verstappen.

See what you're saying, a big plus for the kid is that Dennis clearly loves him and remember how patient he was with Hakkinen for all those years? I think Lewis will be given time IF it's needed, and looking at his first season he looks like he will be one hell of a driver. Lets face it he made a few BIG mistakes which will surely be easier to iron out then if he was constantly making small mistakes.
