'Tailor-made start' puts BMW in driving seat.

'Tailor-made start' puts BMW in driving seat.

As if back-to-back second places in Australia and Malaysia, a maiden fastest lap courtesy of Nick Heidfeld in the latter and the squad's first pole position with Robert Kubica in Bahrain weren't enough, BMW Sauber will head into the European leg of the 2008 Formula 1 campaign in yet another unexpected position – atop the constructors' world championship standings.

They look in very good shape but we all knew that they were going to be up there this season based on their continuous development over the past two seasons. In Theissen, they have a very shrewd leader, efficient team, BMW Power, a great chassis and two solid drivers (although I think Heidfeld has a tough task to contain the lightning pace of his teammate and could feel the heat if he is constantly outperformed.)

They have some way to go though to achieve consistency in race pace although quick over a single lap.

Saying that, the Constructor's table doesn't lie. From a neutral perspective, lets hope it continues throughout the season.

i think kubica will outdrive heidfeld this year. heidfeld seems to not deal with pressure like kubica. and kubica is more agressive and ambitious i think.

i think bmw this year are going to be consistantly finishing 3/4th places whereas i have a feeling that the ferrari/mclaren pace is going to be more up and down and i think within BMW kubica will get the more sensational results like yesterdays pole position but nick will be solidly consitant like last year. overall this could put them in a very strong position cor the constructors championship, remember eddie irvine nearly won the '99 championship by just driving round and round and not being particularly headline grabbing, so maybe this could be sauber this year. we shall see, they look stronger than mclaren for sure

I personally think that despite the Bahrain GP BMW would still be challenging more McLaren than Ferrari.

I wouldn't at least for now write McLaren off.

BMW's getting stronger and the 2008 F1 season just got really interesting. Good to see them taking the fight to McLaren and Ferrari. Also wonderful to see underdogs like Heidfeld and Kubica get their licks in. That team has a clear idea of what they are doing. I hope they keep it up.

Don't count McLaren out though, i expect them to dig deep and pull out some improvements over the European stretch. I'm wondering if the lack of Alonso's setup and development input is now showing on that team because at this time last year, McLaren was looking real strong and development was continuous. And as was pointed out in another thread, McLaren's race strategies are suspect at this point.
