McLaren: Odds were stacked against Lewis.

McLaren: Odds were stacked against Lewis.

Martin Whitmarsh has praised what he called Lewis Hamilton's ‘finest race this year' in Istanbul last weekend, suggesting that had the young Briton begun from pole position rather than third on the grid, he may just have won it.

This story highlights the fact that F1 needs more than one tire supplier. Ridiculous rules such as using both tire compounds make a mockery and clearly show F1 pandering to Ferrari and Bernie's wishes, pushing aside what's best for the sport.

ovrstr, you post the same comment on different threads. tyres played no part apart from lulu's inability to use them properly. different compounds sucks but one tyre for entire race is better. it doesnt make any diference who tyre supplier is, but one supplier ensures that all drivers have the same chance. drivers have to learn to drive accordingly

The facts are this.

1: Bridgestone were wary that another puncture could occur at Turkey which could have cost LH vital points in the title chase

2: LH choose to run on hard tyres instead of soft tyres which were 3 tenths of a second a lap quicker and as a result missed on getting on the front row.

So these factors did force Hamilton onto the back foot in Turkey but he was still able to get a good result and gives hims confidence and momentum to take to Monaco at the end of the month.

iain, none of the other teams had concerns over punctures. punctures can occur to anyone at anytime, they are not person specific. further bridgestone are denying that they advised a three stopper for lulu. this was TEAM decision.

rich ard - the reason Bridgestone advised caution to Hamilton was based on 1) his experience last year - blown tyre: 2) his style of driving. But then you do rather seem to be able to only criticise him. It's a shame these comments columns seem only to generate abuse toward one or other driver, rather than measured critical comment. And as for one tyre supply - that, along with so many other regulations present in F1 now goes totally against the original philosophy of F1 being the pinnacle for innovation and engineering.

ok then just as the car is fitted for the driver so then the tires should be designed around the drivers' style... what a load of baloney lol
The exact tires are used by all the teams, if some drivers choose to abuse the tires by their style of driving then they should pay the consequences, after all that was the reason why we ended up with only Bridgestone and Ferrari had to adapt, remember the problems Ferrari had that first year switching from Michellin?

I can tell you for a fact that in the past before the single tyre supplier regs companies DID develop tyres for individual drivers to take into account their driving style. Those days are gone now and we have a "standard" common tyre design that is issued to all the teams. So it is quite feasible that a driver may find that his driving style puts demands on a tyre approaching or even exceeding its designed operating limits. It's no criticism of the driver but a fact of the present F1 regs. The only thing the driver can do is adjust his driving style but if he is only forced to compromise his race strategy in 1 race out of 18 or so why should he change?

lex, accepting that there is a single tyre supplier, you go on to say "why should (the driver) change (his driving style)" he should, if he wants to win or even finish. a ferrari might not be the best in monaco, but its drives have to adapt their style to be able to compete. schumacher was stuck in 5th gear a few years ago, and adapted his style.this is what true racing is all about!

But rich ard, Hamilton still got 2nd didn't he? Like Lex said, why change your driving style when you're only compromised by it on ONE track?? The team weren't expecting a result as high as that, so how about giving him some credit for once?

And George Zaidan, when did Ferrari switch from Michelin? They've not used them since the 80's!!

Err... I seem to recall that Ferrari were using Bridgstone a long time before the single tyre rule came in (and getting better performing tyres band if they couldn't compete with them)
