Bernie: British Grand Prix 'a dead duck'.

The 2009 British Grand Prix will be the last to be held in the country – that is the warning from Formula 1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone, who admits he ‘would not put any money' on the race continuing to be held at the Northants circuit following the expiry of its current contract next year.

and all the time Monaco gets away with paying zilch !! how does that work then,it's not as if Monaco can get away with calling itself a RACE track, more just an opportunity for some colourful race cars to drive fast close to colourful people with loads of money.

It looks like we will be loosing a lot of the european Grand Prix.

British, French and German are all finding it hard to come up with the funds that Bernie wants.

At the moment Bernie can go to the middle east or emerging market countries who want to get in on staging a Grand Prix and where the government are happy to pay for a track to be built and the annual cost of the race.

I saw earlier in the week that the local authority in germany are not sure whether they will continue to help fund the cost.

The french race is not going to continue at the current venue but may appear in Paris and bernie has also spoke about having a London Grand Prix

bernie cracks the whip (MM please note). there seems to be a plan to get rid of all the european races apart from the Monaco. this appears to be motivated entirely by greed. Europe is the founder of F1 which was initiated to provide for major races in the main european countries. there is money in monaco and the middle/far east and this is why bernie is gravitating eastwards. soon it will not be a WORLD championship, but an asian championship. wouldnt it be ironic if the country that is the hub of F1, be without its own grand prix. the current dictatorship is spoiling the sport.

Why don't they just called it F1 Asia series, cos that's where it's heading. No disrespect to the asian tracks(I think Shanghai, Sepang and Bahrain are really good) but we need the good european circuits to capture a bigger audience.

Agreed, max AND Bernie should go.

oh...just realised rich ard has said exactly what i've said about asia!

Agreed 110% chuchu, it get's worse every year.

@richard, yup it's all about lining Bernies pockets. It's about time Bernie and the teams started looking out for the interest of the sport rather than themselves.

But whatever, let it become F1 Asia, every weekend there is more motorsport than I have time to watch, I wouldn't miss F1 in the slightest.

Screw Bernie and screw F1.

Shows once again his only interest is in money and the power he has. He doesn't give a stuff about fans or history. I know one way the BRDC could save money - not 'pay' the marshals the whole £15 for the weekend!!

The dwarf knows the BRDC cant afford the fees he wants and the modifications he wants but be knows they will bankrupt themselves trying just like hockenheim are doing & spa have come close to. Then he can buy up the pieces at a vastly reduced price, sell tickets at an even higher price & tell us we should be oh so grateful to him.
A london GP wont happen I think coz he wont put his hand in his pocket & boris cant afford it. Who is footing the bill for a paris GP & who is gonna make a mint?

F1 stopped being a Motor Sport a few years back. ITV had to evoke there opt out as no one was watching it. The Silverstone management can't find the people to come to the circuit to pay the bills, so what's the point.
To create perspective a seat in the stands for the Indy 500 is the same as a cost of sandwich at Silverstone. While ovals have yet to catch my imagination, you would never see any of their drivers covering a piddling 150miles and call that a race distances. (500 means 500miles)
The manufacturers killed F1 as a sport: it's a showcase for their brand names as long as it's worked to a price and not ingenuity.

I agree that Ecclestone is a litte Hitler (don't get excited Max!), but Silverstone is a pretty poor venue and not a patch on most of the curcuits around the world. It is a real shame, but it seems the Asians & Middle Easterns just want it more.

Boy, am I glad I got to see F-1 (GP back then I think) live at the Glen in the late 60s/early70s. especially before Armco barriers. The cars were only 1 1/2 liter. skinny tires, and no ground effects, but there was a real connection to what was going on on the track. Now days, yea the cars are high tech, but it's gotten way out of hand cost wise and is reducing the real field to 4 or 5 cars. Europe is F-1 as far as I am concerned, and ditching Silverstone may be the last straw for me.

F1 has been dyeing since the late 80's/ early 90's. Gone are the glory days of more cars than grid slots & the dreaded pre qualifying.
Then there have been the numerous rule changes to make it better viewing, which have all just made it more of a procession
& now it looks like we are going to have even more street circuits with Singapore this year the possibility of Paris & the eternal dream of London.
Monaco has history but in this day and age it is a relic of the past and hardly produces great racing.
The Bernie & Max duo have been killing the top flight of car motorsport for years by bleeding it dry & dumbing it down
And from my point of view they are both equally to blame Bernie for trying to turn F1 in to a clone of Chap/ Indy car
& Max for selling Bernie the commercial rights for 100 ye****** Who in their right mind would compromise the future of a sport with a deal like that?
F1 is now little more than an amusing side show & will remain so for many years after the Ecclestone & Mosley cancer has been cut out!

Strange days it seems! Is Bernie out to kill F1 completely? The heart and soul of this sport is Europe. The new tracks are slick and clean but the vibe is not there and the races are generally very boring and processional. There was no one in the crowd at the last Turkish GP and even Coulthard said recently that the race and venue is very boring and sterile and couldn't wait to get to Monaco. Bernie is senile and greedy and should have retired a dozen years ago. I think the teams and drivers should strike until he stands down and hand the reins to someone who is of sane mind or start a break away series and let the real F1 fans fill the stands at the traditional tracks.

Bernie sadly wields too much power, he seems to forget that Europe is where all the fans are and motor racing is in British blood, remember the greats of our past.
What good will it be for Button, Coulthard and Hamilton if there is no british round.
I'd love someone to come up with a rival series and kick this fool out of it for good then we can get back to real, exciting racing without all the bull****.
I get bored of hearing and reading his rubbish about not having a Silverstone grand prix anymore, no wonder more and more people watch MOTOGP ... exciting, riders are characters and something Bernie doesn't like .. overtaking .. ON TRACK TOO not in the pits !!!

F1Tos, once again your comment rings true and I totally agree with you.
When is all this BULLS HIT going to end? I am sick to death of Bernie and his pervert poodle Max doing their very best to ruin our sport. When is someone with balls going to stand up to this pair of old far ts and take back control of F1.
This may be in very bad taste, but I for one would be very happy indeed if these two were on a plane together and said plane had a major problem!!! Plummet, crash, bang, gone and thank you.

Not sure why everyone always disses Indy Car. I've seen some amazing races, particularly the one in Texas. Crazy side by side passes inches from each other at 220mph. As for F1: it's too bad Europe is losing so many great race tracks. That said, it's still boring as hell. Could it be any more sterile? I'd rather watch Monaco than most. There's never any passing at other tracks (and yes racing IS PASSING), but at least the scenery and in-car views are spectacular.

delighted to see that some people at last agree with me! but seriously, the manufacturers were to run their own series but capitulated at the last moment. why? they are all european but maybe the far east is a more important market to them. how on earth was it possible for mosley to sell the commercial rights for ONE HUNDRED YEARS? especially as BE is (i think) over 80. surely a more astute lawyer than mosely, could find a way of challenging that decision on some grounds.
it should be possible to take some action that would create a rethink. the teams, the drivers and the fans must have some say. maybe a boycott of some sort would work.
