Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA have stunned the Formula 1 paddock by confirming that Donington Park is to host the British Grand Prix from 2010 onwards.
Crikey, that's a surprise!! I like Donington Park, but I can't see it doing a better job than Silverstone necessarily... seems to be a move to a pretty old circuit at a time when mega-rich, high quality circuits are lining up to get on the F1 calendar. Assume Donny will get a spruce up, but it doesn't seem long or wide enough for F1.

Well done BRDC!! now you've got a nice quiet circuit to go with your ivory towers!!!

The place is a toilet, you poor, poor F1 fans.

Boo - yes, my understanding of the situation is that Donington has an investor [owner?] prepared to invest in significantly upgrading facilites for teams and spectators. And also lengthening the track. I assume this will also include widening the track too.
Personally, I reckon that Donington will provide both fantastic racing, and a nice antidote to the watered down circuits we have on the caldendar at the moment. Roll on 2010!

Decided again by the amount of money paid to Bernie. Soon we are going to have all crap races but a good place to go for a sh1t. I always like the racing that Silverstone produces, I am not interested in the condition of the toilets. Funny how the drivers love the track and it is a good circuit for over taking but that's not what Bernie wants, it all money money money.

Where on earth did that come from...
Still I like Donnington and it'll be good to see them flying through the craner curves. But no Silverstone... Wow.

A more central British GP just off the M1 motorway should be better for everyone to get to. I hope they are making the track wider because even the bikes struggle to pass at Donington!

Alonslow4ever - if you are not interested in the condition of the toilets then you will be very very happy at Donnington! I have been going to the MotoGP there for years, and I stayed away this year because it is so poor. Traffic is a joke, the facilities are simply appalling. The one good thing is an awesome track - and now they are threatening that. If they alter craner curves they deserve to be shot.
Also - how much investment needed?? There is one (small) grandstand, no real pit facilities, one road in and out of the circuit, field car parking, and no corporate hospitality centre. Good luck to getting that remedied in under 2 years....

Maybe BE should have read all the complaints about Donnington from the Moto GP race in MCN this week

I'll miss Silverstone, but it'll be cracking, flying in and being able to walk to the track!

Has anyone asked the drivers opinions, every single one of them raves over copse and becketts because they are prpoper corners. Donnington will be like a kart track for them, probably wont even get out of 4th gear down the straight!!
Am guessing the track layout is going to change, although I can't see how or where because you have an airport on one side and the other bit is the best part of the circuit (round by Craners and Old Hairpin). Hopefully they won't go - the sight of F1 cars coming down the Craners will be something to behold!
They are going to be so hard pushed to prepare the track & facilities in the time they have! I have also read so many bad reports about traffic chaos at the Motogp this year. I also expect the MotoGP to go to Silverstone in the very near future!

Surely it can only be that Donnington offered a shedload more money than Silverstone, we all know how much BE likes his dosh...alternatively in a previous life someone on the BRDC must have really pi55ed old Bernie off and this is just a kick in the boIIox to them !!
Where did that come from!!!!. Donington has a superb track, but facility wise it's in the dark ages compared to silverstone...and as for the the car parks and organisation..hahahahahaha!!...I spent four hours trying to get out of the car park at this years motogp.
They would need to build a new road network, numerous stands and fixed toilets, a hard standing car park, widen the track, improve the safety facilites etc etc
The investor donington has must have lined Bernies pockets for this one!!!.

This is great news, you can see a lot more at Donnington than you can at Silverstone. Im sure when all the improvements will be made that this race will be great

Well, got to give Donnington's backers they did atleast come up with £100mil to build the new complex and improvements necessary. Sadly though Silverstones lots of lovely pics and ideas, and the "we might" do such never paid off.
Money as always. Donnington has it, Silverstone hasn't. But the comment off Bernie was odd though, he seemed to hint he would of prefered Silverstone "if" it had got the funds from government.
