Schumacher: I quit F1 to save Massa's seat.

More than a year-and-a-half on from his retirement from Formula 1, Michael Schumacher – the most successful driver in the sport's history – has revealed that he walked away to save his team-mate and friend Felipe Massa's career.

Wonder what Massa has got to say about this?

I watched the Barcelona GP on Speed Channel, and during practice, Shumi was in the Ferrari garage shaking hands, and Massa, suited up to drive, literally walked thru Shumi, brushing past as if he wasn't there. Shumi made a wry smile at this. I was surprised to read this article after that incident.

"making it more difficult to justify Germany having two seasonal slots on the calendar"

So how does BE justify having two GPs in Spain for the next few years.....

Oh yes, more money!

I wonder what ferrari has to say about this! It's not rocket science to imagine which driver they'd prefer there. I guess there's nothing wrong with speaking up about the truth, but I get the feeling Michael would have done Felipe and the team more good by keeping it to himself.

i admire schumi but this is a very poor "excuse". i think that he had just lost interest in F1 and to say this is pure convenience, rather than admit his lack of motivation.

edward, I didn't see the kind of smile, but isn't it possible that if Massa was just about to get in his car, he was "in the zone" and not in a frame of mind to chat?

It is so funny my sides are still aching. What ever MS.
At least MS still stands as a 1st class plonker head and shoulder above anyone else

To Andrew P.

Can't believe he was in a trance. His shoulder caught Schumacher's chest and bulldozed him out out the way. Maybe he thinks Massa will win the title and he's trying to make nice with this statement. Latin's have a chip on their shoulder and Massa's seems to be bigger than most.

Yeah w/e Schumacher. Mr. #1 in the era of F1 of so many drivers aids, it makes it the easiest to drive F1 car. All the "records" just add to his already inflated ego. I already see it happening to Alonso.

I just wish JV stuck with Williams and not join the career ender BAR. things would be so much more lively.

I have been saying this for the last 2 years - it nice to see it confirmed ... Schumacher was the best driver on the grid in 2006.

Williams were already on the down ward spiral BEFORE JV left - why do you think he left . And Felipe trounced JV when they were teammates - the only thing JV bought to the sport was his arrogant whining - a bit like Montoya ... oh and look neither of them are racing any longer

I was never a MS fan. But the man has said nothing new in the latest statement, You can see clearly makes reference to Massa Dilemma post race retirement statement in Monza'06 (Check Youtube). Some silly scribe was desperate to get some statement to justify salary.

All no need to Slander other drivers JV, Montoya or for that matter anyone. F1 like everything else in life is about being at right place in right time. MS was lucky as well as Ferrari rallied behind him thru late 90's else there are teams around the paddock who keep changing the variables constantly and never get the equation right.

You cant argue with Schu's record. He was a very capable driver and very few drivers before or since can be classed as anywhere near as good. Yes he had some lucky breaks and yes he had some very clever technicians and tacticle people in his garage, but no-one can deny his talent, up his own ar'se or not! Forget the arrogance, look through it and see the man. Amazing guy!
I personally think that as good as he was, he still had a doubt in his mind about Kimi and that was why he retired.
Needn't have worried really though cuz Kimi has shown very little sign of being any match for Schu in a Ferrari. Don't get me wrong, Kimi is very quick, but Jack the Lad is not as committed to F1 as Schu.

One wonders if he would come back,if Massa were replaced. This is not to suggest
Massa shold be replaced.on the contrary, I believe he is an excellent driver and deserves to win the F1 World Championship.Maybe then he wold become the new Schumassa?

I think Ferrari could not afford Schu anymore and he was not willing to take a pay cut. I also think he was hurt by the reaction to the Monaco qualifying incident. It seemed like an opportunity to knock him. I doubt that any other driver would have been so openly condemned. Most drivers would have been given the benefit of doubt. Ever since the incidents with Hill and JV everything he did appeared to be tainted to a lot of fans. Compare that to Senna who in my opinion acted in a more calculated and pre meditated way. For some reason Senna got a pass and Schu was vilified.
