Mark Webber has hit out at Formula One's safety car regulations after seeing Nelson Piquet secure his maiden F1 podium in the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
The problem for me is the whole shut pit lane. Any accident or incident that brings out the SC is a random factor that is going to cause disruption, but the lane closure merely exacerbates this rather than damping it down, which is what should happen.
I know the mad dash for the refuelling rig whenever the SC came out under the previous rules looked chaotic, but everyone who took part knew what they were letting themselves in for. Given the near crunch between Vettel and Alonso (not the first near miss in the pitlane this season) a better bet would be to go back to open pit lane, but improve car discipline while in that area.

robsy, too logical for FIA, so it will never happen. webber is right, the 4th slowest car on the grid able to come second ahead of two world champions. not right!
They should just give some responsibility back to the drivers, double-waved yellows lets them know not to take the next blind corner flat.. the rule is a joke at the moment. As much as I wanted to see Piquet secure a good result it should not have been like that. Webber has a valid point and although I've heard him criticise the rule before I'm wondering where the other drivers are on this, doesn't anyone else have the balls to speak up? Kovalainen for starters, I really like the guy but this rule has hit him more than anyone else this year, and being in a quick car the rule is likely to affect him more than others, why isn't he sticking up for what's best for him?
Certainly the SC rules are way too complicated, but as for Piquet - yes, he 'lucked' into his on-track position, but he made the most of it - his speed was respectable enough to keep the likes of Massa at bay - only Hamilton passed him after all. I'm sure there were no "sour grapes" on Webber's part, but some of the comments here sound just like it...luck is one of the most important factors in a race - just ask Webber - after all, his 5th place in Melbourne with Minardi owed just a bit to luck...
I agree with the fact he didn't overtake anybody and the result was a bit of a fluke but the fact remains that at the end only one other was able to run at the pace he was>>>>
his strategy paid off though, isn't that what it is about, didn't anyone take notice of rossi kicking stoners but, faster vehicle didn't win coz others strategy was better, good on you piquet...

Right strategy! Who are you clowns kidding. Yeah they knew there was going to be a safety car period so they planned around it!!! Get real. You last 3 must be brits look at the most negative thing people say twist into what you want and call them moaners! Doesn't matter what people say you lot winge about it! He says too much, He doesn't say anything he's a robot, wake up clowns. At least Casey and Mark have the guts to say what they think unlike most the girls in motorsport.

Relying on the possibility of a safety car is a great strategy!?! oh ya sure!

Mr Awake you forgot to insert sarcasm before reading my post.
Relying on a safety car is a rediculous "strategy" and that's what i was inferring.
Relying on a safety car in your strategy in every race is a receipe for failure. If there was another saftey car in this race for example Nelshino would have been back to the mid pack very swiftly. It's a difficult one to nail down and I don't think there is an answer for it and as much as what MW is saying is true the fact is that it is part of F1 racing and the drivers and fans have to accept the luck factor in this sport. Unfortunately for Mark he seems to be on the wrong side of luck yet these young fella's come along and nail a second place in their first season wich is something he hasn't been able to do in over 100 races hence understandibly his frustration in this article.
