Lewis: I braked late – but so did everyone…

Formula 1 World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton has insisted that he is ‘already getting over' a massively disappointing and frustrating Japanese Grand Prix this weekend that saw him collide with title rival Felipe Massa and fail to score for the first time in eight outings.

7 people agree.  10 people disagree.

Lewis we know what happened. When Massa knocked you from the back it was a Nazi new year in th Ferrari garage. It is obvious so please just shut up and drive. But if Massa wins this championship everything you did will be in vain. Win the remaining 2 please

Was he really given a penalty for late breaking?

If so, that's a key skill to motor racing.

A nazi new year? Don't show your ignorance of history to the world.
Hamilton is demonstrating his ability to choke when a championship is within his grasp. He will continue to do so. Lewis and pressure don't mix well together.

So what have we learned this weekend?

When a competitor is on the inside of you, forcing you to leave the track in the entrance of a chicane, instead of driving and staying off the road to avoid hitting your opponent while giving up the position, the acceptable response is to drive directly into the other car, knocking them back to the end of the longest line, while gaining an advantage for yourself (in the Championship).

This is now a correct and acceptable FIA driving tactic--unless, of course, your team is managed by Ron Dennis.

wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, stop the whining, Hammy screwed up, in front of the WHOLE field! You guys have short memories and seem to have forgotten Schumi being jerked over because the FIA was trying to give Hill a championship. Massa got a penalty for a racing incident as did seabass so why doesn't Hammy deserve one when he screws up and messes up most of the field. Like I've said other places, this whiney the world is against us act you Brits have is getting old after a couple hundred years

BMWfanatic, i like your way of thinking and i am a brit, it's true if our sportspeople don't win or something doesn't go their way, everyone moans, but i couldn't care about Hamilton or Mclaren, Ferrari through and through. Just wanted to say good posts really.

@Hughes- you have to realize that this wasn't a late breaking this was a dive bombing attack. It has nothing to with the "art of late breaking" otherwise he'd stay on the road not forcing Kimi and others off the track.@BMWfanatic-this is a fresh perspective from a Brit. All I see usually hear from a typical F1 fanatic on the island is - the FIA and Ferrari are given the championship fault-finding attitude. The first place a Merc or lulu fan should be looking at is why Hamilton (while losing position in the first corner) was racing Kimi while Massa was behind. I see the shades of last year creeping out where the veins are constricting ad the oxygen is not floating freely to lulu's brain.

lewis, if you dont win this year,i doubt you will win any WDC withing the next 10 years....

clearly renault has got some arrangement about engine development that nobody knows about.. or if not how you explain this dramatic change from 3 races ago to now...

so, if alonso stays at renault... he will win every year from next on!

and you, lewis, will be another Button, Couldhard, R. Schumacher, Irvine..name them

It would be a shame! keep it together these last 2 races... its not to much to ask, is it?

from a vivid new Lewis fan

honestly, I hope F1 dissapears soon, but one of the reason why ecclest goes asia, because these people still dont know enough about this circus

bmwfanatic....You've made it clear that LH screwed up and I agree with you but Massa got the penalty because he drove into LH it was not a racing incident, watch it again you'll see Massa had to attack LH from OFF the circuit. Sebastian B had nowhere to go short of taking to the grass, and it's common racing knowledge that the guy on the inside has won the corner so how does that warrant a 25 sec penalty, make your judgements like we all do but take your Ferrari blinkers off, Massa got off lightly and you know it,he should have been the one getting the 25 secs ...end of story

sennaforever, seabass had just come out of the pits, he had to speed up to hit Massa in the right rear.......probally should have been a drive thru considering the others were, I know the "rules", such as they are, are a 25 second penalty in the last 5 laps otherwise a drive thru so not sure why, but hey, it's Max and bernie's sandbox, they make the rules..... kind of one of about 5,000 reasons i don't miss the "circus" being just 60 miles up the road at IMS. Wonder how big a penalty Gilles would be racking up each and every race.....

it seems the marshalls are slightly biased towards Ferrari. Reward Hamilton with a penalty for late braking? First corner is always tricky. Bet they would have let Massa go, as it was not as obvious as it was and they thought they can get away with it. But then they had the opportunity to favour Ferrari again by penalizing Sebastian, who done nothing wrong except being in front of Massa. Are marshall goiong to decide who will be the next world champion?.....One should really look into their family tree and see if there is an 'Italian Connection'.....It does take the fun out of the sport for me though

"I braked a bit late – but so did everybody. A lot of cars went wide at turn one – and I just went a bit wider than everyone else..."

Ah you dear Hamilton fans and your hero just do not get it...how many sanctions is it going to take for the penny to drop. His driving standards and equitite have been questionable for a number of races now and its getting worse. At Monza he was extremely lucky not to be sanctioned for his stunts with Glock, Alonso and Weber. Even Martin Brundle is starting to questions some of his moves...

Oh and it just love this "...and I am over it already..." nonsence... As if people actually believe it .....Makes me laugh...

You're all missing the point. It wouldn't matter who was driving the macca, Kimi, Lewis or anyone.
Ron will never win the championship again before he retires as he condoned the Michelin teams boycott of the US GP after Toyota's crashout, thereby demeaning F1 in the US.
This has obviously been deemed by BE and co, therefore the 'rules' will be altered to suit.

"You guys have short memories and seem to have forgotten Schumi being jerked over because the FIA was trying to give Hill a championship."

idiot, and YOU must have a short memory of 1994 when Schumi deliberately turned in on Hill to cause the accident that won him the championship. the FIA didn't penalise then, a trait that continued throughout his career. they've always shown him favor

Once he gets out of his baby grow, Lewis may start to look like a professional racing driver. Until then, we will just have to listen to his immature drivel and lies.
The best thing that could have happened to Lewis is for him to have started his F1 career like most drivers do, in a midfield car. Learn the hard way how to win a championship.
He is a true reflection of todays youth. A selfish, disrespectful, spoilt brat!

the outcome of the race was determined by that crazy fool Hamilton-not having the savvy to identify that he was racing Massa-he had no need to try to outbrake Kimi and it ended up costing him crucial points-he lost two to Massa when doing the sensible thing would have gained him some-as I think Massa would have struggled to get by Alonso-such was his pace.
So in the end stupidity shone and he paid the price for it.
Other incidents are clear cut and dried so why go on about it, we know what happened any one who tries to distort the truth is certainly a bit special-I do think that If If it is possible Red Bull should seriously consider withdrawing their Cars from China in protest

 2 people agree.

What people have failed to mention is, whilst LH did out brake himself (too hastily) it was Heiki, also out braking himself that hit KR and pushed him wide.

Seeing penalties for a first corner incidents is just plain ridiculous, there would be 5 drive through penalties every race!

I am commenting on the story itself:
"Felipe ruined Lewis' race" - it is absurd, Felipe saved Lewis' race.
Lewis still would have gotten that drive-through, and he still needed to make that pitstop to change the tires he ruined at the 1st corner. No points for Lewis anyway, but Felipe threw away a lot of points.
