Alex Wurz's future with McLaren-Mercedes has been thrown into doubt following confirmation Wednesday that Gary Paffett will join the Woking based squad in 2006, as an official full-time test driver, alongside Pedro de la Rosa.

Alex Wurz appears to be 'out in the cold' at McLaren following confirmation Wednesday that Gary Paffett will join the Woking based team in 2006.

Paffett will line-up alongside Pedro de la Rosa, as one of the team's official full-time test drivers next season.

Although McLaren CEO, Martin Whitmarsh said that they are still in talks with Wurz, it seems unlikely that the team will need three test drivers. If they do decide to have three testers, it would set a new precedent currently most teams have one or two.

"Whilst we are pleased to welcome Gary to the team, we are still in discussion with Alex Wurz regarding his future and will announce our plans in due course," comfirmed Whitmarsh.

Wurz has been at McLaren for five years, having joined the team back in 2001 after racing for Benetton.

He made his F1 race debut in 1997.
