Formula 1 » F1 may return to Indy - but on MotoGP track.

Tuesday, 17th July 2007

Should grand prix racing go back to Indianapolis one day, it may no longer run on the same circuit.

Should Formula 1 return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at any point in the future, it will likely not run on the same track to which it has been accustomed over the past eight years.

Last week it was announced there would be no US Grand Prix in 2008, after the circuit's owners and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone failed to reach a deal for a contract renewal. Just days later, however, it was revealed a second American round of MotoGP is to be held at Indy next year, without doubt mitigating the blow somewhat for the American race-going public (see separate story – click here).

IMS president and chief operating officer Joie Chitwood stated should Indy welcome the sound of grand prix cars again one day, the teams would probably have to get used to running on the new MotoGP course.

“One of the things that we did moving forward is we had a joint FIM/FIA inspection,” he explained. “That means any changes that are being made to the road course should Formula 1 ever return, we could still use those changes for Formula 1.”
