Sakon Yamamoto spent his first day with the Spyker team in free practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix getting reacclimatised to the rigours of
Formula 1 machinery, but while he was unsurprisingly off the pace, he was nonetheless satisfied with his day's work.
Making a return to Formula 1 having last appeared with
Super Aguri at the end of the 2006 season, Yamamoto got his first taste of the F8-VII during practice and although he was almost six seconds off the pace in the morning, the Japanese driver got that down to just over five seconds in the afternoon.
Nonetheless, while the timesheets make for disappointing reading, Yamamoto was happy to spend the day getting to grips with the Spyker car, adding that his one and only chance on soft tyres was ruined by a yellow flag.
“As today was the first time I had driven a Spyker car, in the morning we spent time checking the car and my position. The final lap time was quite bad we know, but we worked on this in the later session.
“For the afternoon our programme was mainly getting familiar with the car and it's a shame we couldn't use the softer tyres to better effect. When I was on them I had traffic and then a yellow flag, which was bad luck, but we have good preparation for tomorrow and will keep working to have another good drive.”
