Construction of a new pit wall at Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, is set to get underway later this month, when the existing wall will be demolished.

Although the improvements are not part of the British Racing Drivers' Club's ‘Master Plan' to revamp the track and bring it up to standard, circuit bosses were keen to point out that this is 'evidence of Silverstone's commitment to continue to invest in the circuit and its facilities to benefit competitors, teams and fans'.

"Taking up to six weeks to build, the new pit wall will fully comply with the latest FIA regulations and has been designed to withstand considerable impact loadings and speeds of more than 250kph," added the statement from the circuit.

"The new wall – built with 10km of steel reinforcing bars; 1000 cubic metres of concrete; 330 metres of debris fencing and rear tubular handrail; and movement joints to control thermal expansion and contraction – is being worked on through the Christmas break by the construction team to ensure it is completed by the end of January 2008."

Work begins on Monday December 17.
