The former chief of the Shanghai International Circuit has been jailed for four years for his part in a corruption scandal.

The 54-year-old was removed from his post at the home of the Chinese Grand Prix back in May 2007 after being accused of his part in the scandal, which saw large quantities of Shanghai's social fund siphoned off in the form of illicit loans and investments.

According to Sina.com, investigators said Yu had embezzled 800,000 yuan from the Shanghai Shenhua Football Club in 1997 to pay debts owed to a Shanghai developer and took a further 250,000 yuan in 1999 for the same purpose

Yu had been a major force in taking Formula 1 to Chinese shores, being in charge of the circuit when it hosted its first Grand Prix back in 2004.
