Alex Wurz has admitted that he decided to call time on his
Formula One race career because he did not have the energy for a full season - but has revealed that completing 24 hours at Le Mans would be a different matter.
The Austrian makes no secret of his love for sportscar racing, and told the
networld.at that he expects to be back at La Sarthe this June, although no official confirmation of a deal has yet been made. The former Benetton,
McLaren and
Williams driver - who will test for
Honda in
F1 this season - has been linked to the ambitious Peugeot team for the 24 Hours.
"I am waiting for official communication of my future team, but I will be back at La Sarthe for the race - which has been a fascination since the beginning of my career - this year," he allowed.
The youngest winner of the 24 Hours, Wurz had been expected to remain with Williams in 2008, despite stepping back from a race role. Instead, however, he will be unveiled alongside
Jenson Button and
Rubens Barrichello when Honda reveals its challenger for the new campaign next week, having decided to switch camps over the winter.
"Testing and developing [an F1 car] is somewhat that has always been fun for me, and something I will continue to do," the 33-year old said, explaining his decision not to walk away from he top flight completely, "I didn't have to consider much [about switching to Honda] because I always said that I would be happy with another testing role.
"I stopped being a race driver because I wasn't certain that could raise the energy necessary for a full F1 campaign, but that does not mean that I do not enjoy it. My role at Honda allows me to use my experience to work with a big team, where I have already met a heap of extremely crazy people. I am sure we will work well together.
