The new regulations for the season – including, most prominently, the ban on electronic driver aids such as traction control and the new, McLaren-developed standard ECU transmission – have been implemented in an effort to improve the spectacle and reduce costs, but the Italian is concerned some teams may have already found a way around the new electronics.
He told Italian publication
Autosprint that he suspects some rival squads have been using illegal forms of launch and traction control in pre-season testing, with the opening grand prix of the new campaign in Melbourne now just over seven weeks away.
“I'm not saying someone's cheating,” the 33-year-old is quoted as having said in an interview with the magazine, “even though we've received some conflicting information at
Toyota.
“Having analysed the behaviour on the track both now and in the tests in December, though, the changes between them are many – and in several cases suspicious.”
