The Sepang International Circuit could become the latest venue to hold a night-time Grand Prix after the circuit announced it was looking into the possibility of staging night racing.
Although discussions are at an early stage, circuit chairman Dato Mokhzani Mahathir revealed that preperations for night time racing at the Malaysian venue were already underway, with the idea being that the ability to host events under lights would bring more revenue into the circuit.
"We are studying and looking for the best system as there is no one single lighting technology that can fit all tracks, he told the
New Straits Times. The system must be custom made for the Sepang circuit and we are now in discussion with companies which offer such system.
"We have also studied the impact of having lighting technology at the circuit and we have come to the conclusion that it will help generate bigger revenue as the circuit can be rented for night racing.
According to sources close to the circuit, a
Formula 1 race under lights could take place as soon as next season with the venue aware that its geographical location could make it a target for a night race to ensure better viewing figures throughout Europe.
Although sharing the system set to be used in Singapore was one early suggestion, the system is geared up for a street circuit and as such wouldn't be suitable for the more traditional confines of Sepang.
Crash.net understands that Musco who are responsible for the lights at the Qatar
MotoGP race are one company being considered to light up Sepang.
