David Coulthard has claimed that
Mark Webber still has time on his side when it comes to fulfilling the potential he showed at the start of his
Formula One career, despite suggestions to the contrary in the Australian's homeland.
There is a sense of growing impatience with Webber who, despite having started 105 grands prix over six years in the top flight, has only a brace of third places to show for his endeavours. However, with the naysayers claiming that the Australian's time is running out,
Red Bull Racing team-mate Coulthard reckons that Webber can still win races.
"I don't think there's a time restraint against him achieving his goals," the Scot told Melbourne's
Age newspaper in the build-up to this weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix, "It's more down to whether the team can deliver a car that is at least the equal of the best race car on the grid and, if they can do that, you have a real chance of going for victories. If you don't get that, then you're just going to be judged on what results you might achieve based on whatever position the car is capable of finishing."
To be fair to Webber, he has never been in the car
du jour, having traded Minardi for Jaguar,
Williams and Red Bull during his career. While the names suggest that he should have been on to a winner at some point, history confirms otherwise, with Williams - in particular - enduring a slump during Webber's two-year sojourn. To make matters worse for the Aussie, however, it is rumoured that he turned down manager Flavio Briatore's suggestion that he join
Renault at the point that he opted for Grove - only to see
Fernando Alonso net back-to-back titles for the
regie.....
