In the end, neither McLaren was ever able to show pace capable of threatening the supremely dominant Ferraris, and Raikkonen's victory puts him only three points adrift of Hamilton in the world championship. Team principal Ron Dennis, though, moved to stress that the squad had been unable to reveal its real potential as a result of scrapping in the midfield.

“The true pace of our cars was masked today by the inherent understeer that comes when driving in traffic,” the 60-year-old asserted.
