FIA urged to alter 'dangerous' qualifying.

Tuesday, 25th March 2008

We need to address matter urgently before accidents happen, drivers and team bosses insist in message to sport's governing body.

Heidfeld's team-mate Robert Kubica, who finished as runner-up in the Malaysian Grand Prix to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, suggested one solution would be to enforce a maximum lap time for cars heading back to the pits after qualifying, similar to that implemented when drivers complete their formation lap round to the starting grid before the race.

“On the way to the grid, we have a limit in time,” the Polish star explained. “It would be better to have the same rule in qualifying.”

“I clearly don't like the dangers implicit in this situation,” agreed BMW Motorsport Director Dr Mario Theissen. “The speed differentials are so great that this is a problem which we need to urgently resolve, hopefully by the next race in Bahrain.”
