We don't just need to close the gap, Sepang star asserts - we need to overcome it.

“I had a very late first pit-stop [in Malaysia] and my race pace was very close to the race winner, so I think that eventually my podium finish wouldn't have been affected [if McLaren had not been penalised in terms of grid positions]. 2007 was the first season without a podium of my entire career, but now I feel that the trend has turned back in the right direction.

“We have been lurking around the top spot now for the past two races and this gives us even more motivation for working even harder to close the gap. It's also important to remember that a victory cannot be ‘programmed' but must be built.

“I think we need a few more races to get a better understanding of everyone's real strength – let's not forget that for winning races we do not only need to fill a gap, we need to be quicker than the others.”
