“Our programme for 2008 is based on constant growth. We must develop the car all the time because we must work in parallel on two fronts.

“We must keep on working on reliability, because it can create situations from which recovery is difficult, and on performance – with development race-by-race.”

Hamilton added to that by underlining his conviction that McLaren would bite back. The British squad has triumphed four times at the Circuit de Catalunya since 1998, though the last of those victories was back in 2005.

“Don't write us off,” the 23-year-old Briton asserted. “There's a long way to go yet before anyone decides the outcome of the world championship. I'm not giving up – I aim to win it.”
