The British Racing Drivers' Club has announced that it is on target to complete a new Grand Prix Pits complex in time for the 2010 British Grand Prix.
The first computer generated images of the new complex were revealed by the BRDC last month, with the proposals being to move the pits and paddock from its current location between Woodcote and Copse to a new location between Club and Abbey.
The new complex would include new garages, a race control building, media centre, hospitality and VIP spectator zones and a primary paddock, while there would also be changes made to the circuit itself – with the creation of a new pit straight, with re-organised entry and exit points, a reconfiguration of Club Corner and a new Abbey section.
"I am delighted to report that we are close to finalising our plans to build new pits in time for the 2010 British Grand Prix, thus satisfying FOM's pre-requisites to granting us a new
F1 GP contract," BRDC president
Damon Hill said. "Silverstone's new state-of-the-art facilities are therefore moving from aspiration towards reality.
"The BRDC and Silverstone team has achieved an enormous amount over the last year. I am personally both impressed and proud of the commitment shown by the BRDC and by all our team members engaged in this project. In particular, the role played by the BRDC membership has been pivotal in this our 60th Year at
Silverstone."
Hill added that he was confident that the new complex will allow Silverstone to retain the British GP beyond 2010 with F1 supremo
Bernie Ecclestone having said on more than one occasion that the venue had to bring itself inline with the raft of new circuits on the calendar if it was to retain its slot on the schedule.
"Commitment by our members to retain the Grand Prix at Silverstone is as strong now as it has ever been,” he said. “The BRDC share this desire and enthusiasm with thousands of British racing fans and we are doing everything within our power to keep the Grand Prix at the home of British Motor Sport.
"The negotiations with FOM are ongoing and reasonable terms on a new contract will help us to fulfill our ambitions."
