Formula 1 » Brawn: Don't rule out Alonso Ferrari switch.

Monday, 28th April 2008

Don't write off possibility of Spaniard jumping ship to Maranello in 2009, former Ferrari technical director and now Honda team chief asserts - and if they don't want him, we'll have him.

Current world championship leader Raikkonen's contract with Ferrari expires at the end of the 2009 campaign, and 1982 title-winner Keke Rosberg told German television over the weekend that he can imagine his countryman – still just 28 – hanging up his helmet at that point.

Brawn also suggested that – once Honda is capable of producing a car that can fight for victory – he would seriously consider trying to procure 19-time grand prix winner Alonso's services, though what current incumbents Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello would make of his comments is less clear.

“When we reach that level, we will have to have one of the best drivers,” the 53-year-old asserted. “I am not saying we want Alonso; I am just saying that, currently, there are two or three drivers that are above the level of the rest, and Alonso is one of them.”
