Heikki Kovalainen's accident at the Circuit de Catalunya prevented the Woking team from adding a second points score to its tally, leaving it third in the constructors' championship, a point behind BMW but 13 shy of leader Ferrari. Hamilton's six-point haul returned him to second in the individual standings, albeit nine adrift of leader Kimi Raikkonen.
