Weigl Group confirms Barcelona presence, but denies rescue plan.

German automotive engineering giant Weigl has said that reports linking it to a possible rescue bid for the ailing Super Aguri F1 team are both premature and wide of the mark.

With technical partner Honda having said that it is not prepared to fund Aguri Suzuki's team on a race-by-race basis after helping it get to last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, the Leafield-based operation is in desperate need of a financial miracle following the collapse of its deal with the Magma Group two weeks ago. However, despite several potential suitors having been mentioned in connection with the team, and Suzuki appearing upbeat and confident in television interviews at the Circuit de Catalunya, time is fast running out.

The Weigl Group was among the latest rash of companies linked to Super Aguri, after an internet report was picked up and repeated, but has played down the speculation, which appears to have been kick-started by the firm's chief executive visiting SAF1 during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.

Although the reports claim that Franz Josef Weigl discussed helping the team see out the 2008 campaign, the company has ruled out any major involvement.

Honda is alleged to have funded Super Aguri through the Barcelona weekend, but a source told the Japanese press that such assistance would not be forthcoming for the rest of the season, potentially leaving Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson - as well as the workforce at Leafield - out of a job.
