Unexpected failure gives French outfit cause for concern ahead of Istanbul outing in ten days' time.

"Also I think we will find it is an exception – when you have something go wrong in an area [where] you don't normally have problems, it is generally due to a manufacturing error or something that slipped through the net.

"Of course I'm worried because we don't know, but I suspect our worries will be alleviated by the time we get to Turkey."

Renault's head of engine track operations Denis Chevrier, meanwhile, has moved to calm fears that the engine concern will set the team's progress back, following the substantial step forward it took before the start of the European campaign in Barcelona. The Frenchman told Spanish newspaper AS minor adjustments should probably suffice to rectify the issue, and dismissed any suggestions Alonso's driving may have caused the blow-up.

"In other words, the internals were not affected," the Frenchman explained, "and therefore it is not a fundamental failure and we can address that immediately.

"Everything from Fernando's side was normal. It was simply a problem of reliability."
