The 61-year-old – currently in Britain in his capacity as Team Australia director for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport season finale at
Brands Hatch this weekend – also had words of encouragement for his old squad
Williams, celebrating 30 years in F1 in 2008. The Grove-based concern made a bright start to proceedings with
Nico Rosberg's rostrum finish in the Melbourne curtain-raiser, and though there have been slim pickings from thereon in, the British outfit's first world champion insisted that – like
Ferrari following the
Scuderia's own barren period in the early-to-mid 1990s – Williams would return to race-winning form.
“I've been saying this for years and thank goodness they are starting to come good now,” admitted Jones, still good friends with team co-owners Frank Williams and Patrick Head. “Williams is a team that is just too good to discount.
“They will come back, and they will come back strong. I think Williams have the resources and the technology and the people that are needed to do the job, and I'm sure they will.”
The twelve-time grand prix winner also explained the attraction of A1GP to him, even if it is a very different concept to
F1.
“Number one, I love motorsport,” he affirmed, “and number two, it gives me an opportunity to continue in an international motorsport career without having my bum in the car.”
