David Coulthard will take time out of his Canadian Grand Prix preparations to sample an altogether different type of motorsport, as he drops in on
Red Bull's NASCAR operation at Dover's Monster Mile.
With Red Bull Racing's press office stressing that the visit is for nothing more than a promotional film shoot
en route to Montreal, DC will join the two-car
Toyota team for race day in Delaware [1 June] and get the chance to check out the cockpit of the Camry 'Car of Tomorrow', as well as sitting in on the team's pre-race engineering briefing.
"Please note that David is visiting this event solely to shoot a film for Red Bull and we would appreciate it if you did not start a load of silly rumours about him switching from
F1 to NASCAR in 2009," Red Bull's communications team said, tongue-firmly-in-cheek, aware that the Monaco F1 weekend was awash with suggestions that German talent
Sebastian Vettel may be heading for Coulthard's seat at Milton Keynes next season.
The Scot's season to date has resembled more of the rough-and-tumble of NASCAR than
Formula One, with collisions, most not of his making, affecting four of his outings. Sprint Cup drivers Brian Vickers and AJ Allmendinger, meanwhile, have enjoyed an upturn in form in the team's second season, with Allmendinger breaking his duck with victory in the non-points Sprint Showdown event last weekend.
“I'm interested in all sorts of racing, but hardly ever get a chance to see anything other than Formula One," Coulthard admitted, "So when Red Bull came up with the idea of shooting a promo film around their NASCAR operation on the week before the Canadian GP, it seemed like a great opportunity to go and see why this form of racing is so popular in the States.”
