Adrian Sutil says he is eager to get back on-track again in Canada this weekend to prove that his stirring showing in the Monaco Grand Prix last time out was not merely a flash in the pan.
Having failed to finish any higher than 16th in the first five races of the 2008
Formula 1 campaign, the young German performed brilliantly around the tight, demanding streets of the Principality to keep his head and rise up to a competitive fourth place – at one point incredibly setting the race's fastest lap.
The dream would end prematurely, however, when he was unceremoniously removed from the action by an out-of-control
Kimi Raikkonen with just a handful of laps left to run, dashing his hopes of what would have been by some margin the finest result of his fledgling career in the top flight and leaving him inconsolable. Now, he insists, he is keen to show there's plenty more where that came from.
“Of course the ultimate result in Monaco was disappointing,” the 25-year-old reflected, “but eventually I realised what we had achieved was really special. We had the race under control and were running a strong fourth with many cars behind us – it's not every day that happens, especially for us.
“I said after Turkey that I just wanted to have a good weekend – a good practice, qualifying and then race – and we really nailed it in Monaco. My feelings after the race were very difficult to explain. I was frustrated and upset, but it's really boosted my confidence knowing we can do it and it's really made me motivated to prove that Monaco was not just a one-off.
“Montreal is a track I like a lot. Like Monaco, it is different to anywhere else we visit over the season, with long, fast straights going into deep hairpins that mean you really need to be precise. Last year it was not such a good result for the team, but with that experience I know what to avoid. The city is also fantastic, so overall I am really looking forward to going there.”
