Sebastian Vettel will play no part in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix having badly damaged his
Scuderia Toro Rosso entry in the final free practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Vettel, along with Toro Rosso team-mate
Sebastien Bourdais, found the wall at the exit of the turn six chicane but, unlike the Frenchman, caused serious damage to the STR3, which has had something of a troubled life in terms of accidents since its first appearance in testing in April.
Vettel ran wide exiting the chicane on the back side of the circuit, making heavy right-side contact with the concrete, ripping off the car's rear wheel and leaving the front flapping wildly on its tether. The driver was unhurt in the impact, but the amount of shed debris caused the organisers to throw the red flag to allow the marshals to clear the track.
Unfortunately for Vettel, the damage was sufficient to require Toro Rosso to build up the spare car for him to continue his participation in the weekend, ruling him out of qualifying and forcing him to start from pit-lane on Sunday.
"The impact was not that hard, but it was enough to badly damage the car," Vettel told journalists, "We can't repair that car, so we will have to build another. Sadly there is not enough time to do that in time for qualifying."
Bourdais will be able to take part in the session, having done only minor damage to his STR3.
