Laudable consistency has seen the 23-year-old finish inside the top five in seven races out of eight this year, keeping him a scant two points shy of the championship lead and meaning he has already topped his overall 2007 total of 39 points less than four months into the new campaign. That, however, he underlines, is still not enough, and the Munich and Hinwil-based concern must up the ante in terms of its rate of development if he is to have a chance of challenging for the leading honours again in 2008.

“It's not enough,” he stressed. “To be honest, with our car, even at full performance the best we can achieve [on merit] is fifth.

“I'm still there [because of Ferrari and McLaren's problems and mistakes], but if they start not having problems and not making mistakes it will be very difficult to keep up with them.”
