Formula 1 » Senna in 'intensive talks' with BMW for '09.

GP2 Series title challenger Bruno Senna 'determined' to get an F1 test with BMW as he bids to break into the top flight in 2009, it has been claimed.

Bruno Senna is in ‘intensive talks' with BMW-Sauber regarding a possible Formula 1 role in 2009, reports have hinted.

German publication Sport Bild states that the young Brazilian – sitting second in the GP2 Series title standings with victory at Monaco already under his belt in 2008 – could become either a test driver or even race driver for the Munich and Hinwil-based concern next year.

There have been numerous suggestions in recent weeks that Nick Heidfeld's days at BMW are numbered, with the experienced German having struggled so far to get a grip on Bridgestone's current Potenza rubber and lagging some way behind the pace of former world championship leading team-mate Robert Kubica eight races into the campaign.

Senna is the nephew of the late triple F1 world champion Ayrton Senna, and his career has been closely tracked by his uncle's long-time friend and former McLaren team-mate Gerhard Berger, now co-owner of Scuderia Toro Rosso.

“I will help Bruno, and his family who look out for his career, to do it,” the Austrian ten-time grand prix winner admitted. “His development is obvious, and there is no doubt he has talent.”

Sport Bild claims that Berger discussed Senna at Magny-Cours with BMW Motorsport Director and former colleague Dr Mario Theissen. An insider confirmed to the magazine: “Senna is determined to get a test, and then BMW will decide.”

STR, sister outfit Red Bull Racing and Williams are also said to be potentially interested in procuring the services of the 24-year-old, who is backed by McLaren-Mercedes sponsor Santander. For now, however, Senna insists he is remaining focussed on the task in-hand – lifting the GP2 crown with iSport International.

“I must continue to push and win races and podiums,” he asserted. “Then I can dream a little bit more.”
