“Keeping the rules in mind, to avoid a penalty I think we will use a new unit to try to reduce the risk,” Domenicali revealed.
Reflecting on an impressive start to the campaign that has yielded five victories, five pole positions, five fastest laps and 91 points from the opening nine grands prix, however, the Italian acknowledged that the
Scuderia is looking in fine form indeed – even if he was keen to stress that there is always room for improvement.
“Looking at the numbers we can be satisfied of what we have done until now,” he affirmed, “but we can't forget that it hasn't all been that smooth. We left some important points down the road, because of a lack of reliability or because of mistakes on every level. Our situation in the championship could be much better.
“Even during a weekend when our performance has been much better than our competitors, we have risked not reaching our goal by a defect of some minor detail. We were able and also lucky to bring home Kimi's car [in Magny-Cours] – this alarm bell has to keep us alert.
“Maybe the most comforting point coming from the first eight races of this year is that the car has been competitive on different types of circuit so far. We made a big step forward compared to last year, even on those tracks which were a bit difficult, such as Monaco and Montreal.
“We managed to do that because we've worked during the planning and the development of the car and because we had a different approach in these grands prix than we had over the last years, in terms of set-up. We're still disappointed though that, despite our efforts, we didn't gain enough in these races, either through our own fault or because the situations were a bit special.”
Looking to the task in-hand – the British Grand Prix, in which
Ferrari has triumphed on no fewer than 14 occasions since the inception of the
F1 World Championship all the way back in 1950, and five times in the past decade – Domenicali is confident of further success, if mindful of the challenge posed by chief rivals McLaren-Mercedes and BMW-Sauber.
