Heikki Kovalainen steals British GP pole from Mark Webber to set up unexpected front row at Silverstone.

Heikki Kovalainen confirmed the promise he has shown through the early stages of the British Grand Prix weekend by claiming his first Formula One pole position.

The Finn saved the best for last, pipping Mark Webber for top spot with the final lap of the ten-minute shoot-out session after the Red Bull Racing driver appeared to have marked his new contract with a career best qualifying performance.

Kovalainen ended up leading the field by a massive half-second, but there was no glorious homecoming for McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who ran out of road on his first flying lap, and showed restraint at the same point second time around to 'only' claim fourth, joining world champion Kimi Raikkonen on row two.

Ferrari's woes continued to some degree with Felipe Massa back in ninth and facing another comeback drive at Silverstone, while BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica failed to post a time after his own off.

Nick Heidfeld took fifth, ahead of the two Renaults and Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel.
