Alonso: F1 'luck' always on Hamilton's side.

Formula 1 » Alonso: F1 'luck' always on Hamilton's side.

Monday, 8th September 2008

'Luck' has put Lewis Hamilton atop the F1 World Drivers' Championship standings in 2008, claims former McLaren-Mercedes team-mate and bitter title rival Fernando Alonso.

Fernando Alonso has suggested that Lewis Hamilton always has luck on his side in Formula 1, despite the Briton having been controversially stripped of his stunning triumph in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps at the weekend by FIA stewards.

Alonso and Hamilton were team-mates and bitter title rivals at McLaren-Mercedes last season, and the rapid deterioration of their relationship played a significant part in the former's premature departure at the end of the campaign, the Spaniard returning to his former team Renault, with whom he had claimed his two back-to-back world championship crowns in 2005 and 2006.

Now it is Hamilton who is leading the chase to steal that mantle, sitting two points ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa atop the drivers' standings with five races remaining – and 50 points left to play for.

Alonso pointed out, however, that had it not been for Ferrari's shaky reliability costing Massa victory when the 27-year-old was almost in sight of the chequered flag in Hungary last month, it would be the Brazilian, and not his McLaren adversary, in the driving seat right now as the battle for honours closes in.

“We'll see how it ends,” 19-time grand prix-winner Alonso told Spanish newspaper Diario AS. “I feel it is the same as last year; [Hamilton is] fast at all the circuits, very steady, but with luck always on his side.”

Having been linked to the Scuderia himself in the near future, Alonso also sought to re-affirm that even if Hamilton does clinch the 2008 laurels to deny either Massa or defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen glory, a move to Maranello as soon as next season is not on the cards for him.

“It would not change much,” the Oviedo native underlined. “If Ferrari want me, they will hire me, and if they do not, they won't. Who wins the title or not is not going to change anything.”
