Formula 1 » Alonso hails history; new Spanish F1 team dawns.

Singapore Grand Prix winner Fernando Alonso reflects on a history-making first for F1 - as GP2 Series team owner Adrian Campos moves one step closer in his efforts to join the top flight with a new Spanish outfit.

Surprise Singapore Grand Prix winner Fernando Alonso has stated that every driver on the 2008 Formula 1 grid became a part of history in taking part in the sport's inaugural night race last weekend – as a new Spanish F1 team took a step closer to reality.

Alonso hailed ‘a great weekend' for the top flight in the Far Eastern city-state, as the world's most glamorous and expensive sport showed that it certainly still knows how to enjoy itself and put on a good show, international credit crunch or no.

The 27-year-old former double F1 World Champion famously prevailed in Singapore from all the way down in 15th place on the starting grid, producing a magnificent – if safety car-aided – performance at the wheel of his unfancied Renault to ascend the rostrum for the first time in a year.

Afterwards he acknowledged that it had been a spectacular result in a spectacular setting and on a spectacular weekend – one that will go down in F1's history books.

“It was a great weekend for everyone in Formula 1, the first night race,” the man from Oviedo is quoted as having said by F1SA. “We all had a new challenge in front of us, and we will all be part of history.”

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that former Minardi F1 ace and GP2 team owner Adrian Campos is making progress in his bid to launch a grand prix outfit in the not-too distant future.

Campos currently co-owns Campos Grand Prix in the F1 feeder series with Alejandro Agag, and national newspaper El Mundo claims the 48-year-old has come up with multi-million Euro plans to build a wind tunnel ‘as the next step towards Formula 1'.

According to the paper, the project – comprising a 40 per cent scale wind tunnel and seven-poster rig – will be based in Alzira in the Valencia province of the country.
