In the latest Carlin column for Crash.net, Sebastian Vettel looks forward to racing in the 53rd Macau Grand Prix with Carlin Motorsport and talks about what it’s really like to be called the next Schumacher...
This year will be my second time at the Macau Grand Prix. Macau is a really special circuit, it’s the best track in the world and the most challenging. Every driver wants to win there. You just need to look at the drivers who have won at Macau in the past to see how prestigious it is.
It’s so easy to make a mistake around Macau. And unlike other circuits, if you make a mistake, your race is pretty much over, there aren’t any run off areas or gravel traps. Even if you don’t make a mistake yourself, it’s really easy to get caught up in other people’s accidents.
It was great to finish my first attempt at Macau last year on the podium. All through the race I was waiting for cars to crash around me, but I managed to stay out of trouble. Only a few laps before the end there was quite a big accident further down the field and the safety car had to come out. This meant that I lost the gap I had built up and had to defend my position for the last couple of laps. Thankfully I managed to keep a good gap between myself and [Joao Paulo] de Oliveira to keep third place. It was such a great feeling. Obviously I hope I’ll be able to do even better this year.
