In the races I didn’t know what position I was in; I was just trying to do the best I could. In the first race I tried to be aggressive at the start and that worked very well – I managed to overtake a lot of cars on the opening lap. Unfortunately I then had an electrical problem; in some corners the car would stop and then start going again, and I never knew when that was going to happen. It happened seven or eight times in total I think, and it affected my concentration a bit, not knowing exactly when it would cut out next but aware it would happen sooner or later.
In the second race I was under pressure and I arrived at the hairpin really pushing to the limit, but I pushed a bit too hard and locked my rear wheels. I thought I would go off but I managed to control it and keep it on the track, but it cost me some places. I had been ninth at the time and in the end I finished 11th so that definitely cost us a point or two.
At
Oulton Park everybody did their job well; we are already a very professional team. Yes, we had mechanical problems, but we didn’t have any structural problems, and that’s the most important thing. It was a big challenge, but everybody coped very well with the pressure.
Donington Park is next on the calendar, and it’s where I had my best race in the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2003, so I know the track. It’s a shorter circuit than Oulton with fewer corners, and my goal there will be to reduce the gap to the top guys.
It won’t be easy to peg the time back, but for sure we will work very hard to try to do so. We need a lot of development parts from the factory, as well as working very hard on the set-up, but we have the full backing of the factory and we will push very hard to get closer to the top ten race-by-race.
